100 years ago children were working all day at home or in the world, today we are cutting their meat at dinner. What happened?
In the 1900’s children were commonly employed in textile factories, coal mines, canneries and much more. Sure, we don’t want to go back to the days of child labor. But, we have over-rotated by doing tasks for our children that they can easily do for themselves. Things like: waking themselves up, packing their lunch, choosing their clothes and so much more.
Some parents have bought into the lie that we are neglecting our kids if we don’t cater to them. But we know better.
Remember back to when your toddler had a meltdown in the store? All he wanted at that moment was the candy or toy he saw. Short term, the way to “help” was to give him what he wanted but we all know that giving in to the meltdown will not help him in the long run.
The truth is: Real help comes in giving your child what is best for them. If we knew that when they were toddlers, why did we forget that when they are older?
We need to get back to empowering our children by expecting more from them.
What are they capable of? This week I have a list of responsibilities your child can handle at every age. This will allow you to slowly transition the weight of responsibility onto their shoulders so they can build up the muscles they will need to be ready for the real world. Enjoy!
